driver collectively travel over 10,500 Million kilometers each year. If you’re one of the people driving in SA, you probably already know that the Government of South Australia seeks to educate the general public about road safety.

But do you know exactly what your own individual responsibilities are? We’re all aware that we need to hold a valid driver’s license before we can drive. But did you know that you’re directly responsible for ensuring that any car you’re driving is registered? This includes not only vehicles you own, but any you choose to drive which don’t belong to you.

Whether you’re looking to buy a used car, or are about to go on a road trip and drive an unfamiliar car it’s important to check the car’s history, starting with a rego check.

FAQ about SA rego check

You can still renew your rego online if it has expired. You will be given 2 options: Renew the rego for 3 or 12 months from the old expiry date. Elect to re-register for 3 or 12 months from the date of payment.

rego paid early (before the expiry date) will commence the day after the existing expiry date. rego is valid until midnight of the expiry date – eg if a rego is due to expire on the 26 June, the vehicle can be driven up until midnight on the 26 June.

Other options. When you buy or acquire a vehicle (including trailers, caravans and motorcycles) that is registered in SA, you must transfer the rego within 14 days or you’ll have to pay a late transfer fee of $92. There are additional requirements for heavy vehicles and unregistered vehicles.

Fines for offenders driving unregistered vehicles are about to jump from $335 to $1000, with vehicles unregistered for more than one month attracting an additional $1,500 fine for owners, up from $616. 30 days after rego ends the third party policy on a vehicle lapses, hence the larger fine.

Demerit points are not incurred for parking infringements, driving an unregistered vehicle, or driving without a valid licence. However, financial penalties still apply for these offences. Demerit points can be incurred for some offences committed interstate.

First, to transfer rego to SA, vehicle owners must visit a Service SA office in person with required documents. If you cannot show an interstate rego certificate, your vehicle needs a roadworthy inspection to confirm its correct identity.

In South Australia, stamp duty is $60 for the first $3,000 of the purchase price, then 4 per cent for every dollar over this figure.
